Signage and visual solutions provider, Lavastar, has enhanced its production capabilities with the purchase of a new Canon Colorado M5W printer from kit supplier, CMYUK.

The flagship model in the M series, the M5W offers speeds up to 159sq m/h, with white ink, matt and gloss finishing, and double-sided printing capabilities.

The wide-format press is Lavastar’s second Canon UVgel printer – the first, a Colorado 1650, was purchased from CMYUK three years ago.

Ed Kelsing, director at Lavastar, says: “Our increasing print volumes meant we needed more print capacity.

“We were very happy with the speed and quality of our existing Colorado, and a second one not only gives us more volume, but some back-up too – if one goes down, we can still deliver. The Colorado doesn’t need anyone standing over it: we can print five 50m rolls in the day, and then before we leave just load up another one.”

Canon recently announced the launch of the Colorado XL-series, a new platform of 3.4m roll-to-roll and hybrid printers developed to utilise Canon’s UVgel technology.

The products have been described by Canon as “modular to the max”, offering the option for printers to upgrade the machines throughout their lifetime.

Earlier this year, CMYUK was named as Canon's top global sales partner for the Colorado printer series in 2024.

The accolade was announced and presented on the opening day of this year’s FESPA Global Print Expo, following CMYUK’s announcement that it was also Canon’s top partner in Europe for Colorado sales in the same period.

Recent work by Lavastar includes a full scaffolding encapsulation for the transformation of The Lazari Building in Mayfair.

The project included 2,400sq m of high-level building wrap designed by artist, Hugo Dalton, and featured six advertising panels designed to provide updates throughout the construction phases.

The project will continue to evolve alongside the construction schedule, with final completion targeted for late 2026.
