The Drytac MultiTac adhesive product has enabled The Muddy Merch Co. to expand its customer base
Oregon-based custom leather patches company, The Muddy Merch Co., has spoken of its creative use of Drytac’s MultiTac adhesive to produce bespoke hats.
The company was founded in 2019 by husband and wife Kristy and Greg Barton where they created custom products such as baseball caps and beanies.
With the business quickly taking off, the pair moved operations to a retail space in downtown Redmond, Oregon a little over a year after launching and most recently moved to a larger facility.
Outsourcing the production of patches initially to a local laser engraver, the owners would then glue and stitch on individual patches in their shop using contact cement or spray on adhesive. This has to be done for each patch and was extremely time consuming and put limitations on production capacity.
To address this, the company tested out a range of products and landed on Drytac’s double-sided pressure-sensitive adhesive technologies. After further research, the owners decided on the MultiTac permanent, high tack acrylic adhesive which is available in clear or white which it purchased from approved Drytac distributor Digital Technology Group (DTG) in Tampa, Florida.
Available on a roll, this solution was the perfect size for the leather and the composition enabled the company to run it through the laser. “We knew our application wasn’t what the product has historically been used for, but it ended up being the absolutely perfect solution for us!” says Kirsty Barton.
Barton adds that because the product comes with a transfer paper, the team was able to store and stack the patches without anything sticking together, ready to be stuck onto the hat when needed.
According to Barton, this investment has enabled the company to significantly expand its customer base over the past four years.
