Le Mans double wrap turns heads in France

The Le Mans 24 hour race is a highlight of the year for the racing world.

The Le Mans fans’ Jaguar and VW were kitted out in Metamark vinyl wraps ready for their trip to the big race

As Audi screamed to yet another victory this June, the stamina-focused race is as dangerous, high speed and nail-biting as ever and it has gathered a loyal fan base, which often travels to the Sarthe region to witness the race from the stands.

This year, Bridgend-based Elite Signs granted the wishes of two Le Mans enthusiasts by wrapping their vehicles in a homage to the 24 hour race before they made the pilgrimage to central France.

Simon James and the team at Elite wrapped the fans’ Jaguar XK and VW T25 campervan in the liveries of the Le Mans competitors using Metamark’s MetaWrap vinyl.

The fans then drove the cars across France to the race itself and were reportedly ‘treated like celebrities’ along the way, with enthusiasts pulling them over to snap photos of the striking pair.

Having already been wrapped by Elite for a 2011 Le Mans tour, the Jaguar returned for an updated look

“Having already been wrapped by Elite for a 2011 Le Mans tour, the Jaguar returned for an updated look. Working just from low-res photos, the team recreated the purple and silver Silk Cut Jaguar team wrap, matching the colour and design perfectly,” explained Metamark in a public statement about the project.

The statement continued: “The camper took on the mantle of the Gulf Porsche 917—an ambitious aspiration perhaps for the vintage chugger, but no doubt creating an eye-catching sight on the route through France.”

The team from Elite said that the Jaguar presented difficulties in its curved application surface, but they worked well with the MetaWrap MD-X for the base colours and the silver metallic devices cut from Metamark MD5, creating a mixed-media ensemble. For the iconic ‘VW Gulf’, Elite used Metamark M7 and MD5 to transform the vehicle into a Le Mans-worthy machine.

As the vehicle wrapping sector moves from strength-to-strength, more complex projects such as these will undoubtedly become more popular once people begin to realise the opportunities available. Metamark has reacted to this by offering ‘Learn to Wrap’ training courses for its users, teaching advanced techniques to make the most of the new materials.

Elite makes the point that this kind of commission shows vehicle wrapping to have personal, recreational possibilities in markets beyond advertising.
