Strictly speaking: who won what at the sign awards

They came in their glad rags, their dinner jackets and their smart casuals. The sign-makers of Great Britain arrived in style and in good spirits for the BSGA British Sign Awards at Aston Villa last week.

Movies sign: the winners of the small sign-maker award have created signs for the TV dance show

The inaugural event attracted more than 250 entries with the British Sign and Graphics Association offering 13 categories for the firms to compete for. In a slick and stylishly organised afternoon 320 people sat down to lunch at the venue in Birmingham where they were entertained by a jazz band and comedian Bob ‘The Cat’ Bevan before David Catanach announced the short-listed entrants. Each of the winners was read out by the great and the good of the industry who presented their trophy before a brief visual and audio description of their entry was presented on large screens around the function room.

It’s the highest profile event organised by the BSGA for many years and it exceeded all our expectations

“It’s the highest profile event organised by the BSGA for many years and it exceeded all our expectations,” says David Dyke, Association President. “We felt that the industry needed an awards scheme that had real meaning and value and that the BSGA, as the organisation that represents the interests of the industry and constantly presses for higher achievement in terms of both creativity and quality, was the right organisation to manage it.”

The 2014 Awards reached their climax at the Gala Presentation staged at the Holte Suite at Villa Park with the unveiling of 12 sign-maker award winners plus the presentations of a ‘product of the year’ award and a special BSGA award and, finally, the announcement by corporate sponsor 3M of the winner of the Sign of the Year trophy, which went to Kettering-based Sign of the Times for a quite extraordinary sign created for the Heinz Innovation Centre in Holland.

The winners took to the stage at the end of the ceremony

“The award categories were created to reflect every facet of modern sign-making, from hand-crafted signs to those which incorporate the very latest technology,” said David Catanach, Director of the BSGA.  “Every category was competitive, but we were delighted that the ‘Small Sign-maker of the Year’, open only to businesses employing between 1 and 5 people, was the most competitive, with over 40 entries.

“The panel of judges faced an unenviable task but, to make things absolutely fair, the identity of every entrant was carefully redacted from every submission.  The judges based their decisions purely on the written submissions and images supplied.

“The awards were open to every sign business in the UK and most entries did, in fact, come from companies who are not members. We hope that the Awards will serve to highlight the role of the BSGA in representing and supporting the industry and that business that entered the awards will now consider it worth joining the association to support the important work we do.”

The breadth of work covered was an eye-opener according to Bevan who admitted he hadn’t realised the huge range of creativity within the industry

The breadth of work covered was an eye-opener according to Bevan who admitted he hadn’t realised the huge range of creativity within the industry. To give just one example of the type of work, the winners of the Small Sign-Maker Award were responsible for signs that appear in the BBCTV programme Strictly Come Dancing flashing up above the dancers. The London based firm of Goodwin & Goodwin picked up the award for Illuminated Projects.

Catanach told SignLink that it had been a great day for the industry and he was already planning next year’s event which he hoped would be bigger and attract more entries as the BSGA attracted more members – once he’d had time to have a drink and put his feet up for five minutes at the weekend.
