Signs have gone up in Avon Gorge, Bristol, warning people not to swim in the flowing waters of the river that carves through the spectacular landscape near Bristol.

Grrr: the signs are made of dibond

The reason is that popular local belief has it that a crocodile is at large. It is an idea that has been dispelled by zoologists and reptile experts but nevertheless some people say they’ve seen the amphibious creature of the deep.

The firm behind the unofficial signs is Insight Print Media of Bedminster, a suburb of the city of Bristol. The local newspaper reported that Tom Simpson and Kevin Davidson, co-founders of the firm, had put the signs up this week after new sightings were reported of the animal.

They added that the council had denied they were officially sanctioned but would allow them to remain in place for a while so more people could enjoy the joke

The Bristol Post said the signs are made from dibond (aluminium and foamex), a similar material used for road signs, and attached using heavy duty clips.

They added that the council had denied they were officially sanctioned but would allow them to remain in place for a while so more people could enjoy the joke. However other signs at the harbour had been taken down by the sailing club for fear of frightening those engaged in water sports, said the newspaper.
