We’re going to jump out of an airplane!

It seems completely bonkers, to jump out of an airplane at around 13,000ft above Yorkshire…but not if you are wearing a parachute.

Skydivers: the Stock Displays team are hoping to raise £5,000 between them

Staff at sign firm Stock Displays in Doncaster will be raising more than £5,000 for Blue Bell Wood children’s hospice on July 6th when they take part in the charity skydive.

Most people would refuse point blank to do something so high-octane but when it comes to helping the hospice something touches the heart and it is surprising what people will do.

Rachael Dawes of the hospice says: “Good luck and thank you to everyone at Stock Displays for taking on such a thrilling, adrenaline-fuelled, challenge for Bluebell Wood.”

The fatality rate is about 0.21 per 100,000 jumps (1 in 470,000) and there were no tandem fatalities in the UK in the last 20 year block studied (1994-2013)

“Taking part in a challenge to raise money for Bluebell Wood really does make a difference. Our staff are dedicated to creating happy and fun memories for our families both at the hospice and through our work in the community. It is really touching that so many people from one company have been inspired to do a sky dive.”

The Stock Displays team are hoping to raise £5,000 between them all with other fund-raising events in the pipeline. The hospice is close to the hearts of many of staff members, with some being regular fund-raisers, while the hospice even provides respite care of a family member of one colleague.

Lauren Lawson of Stock Displays says: “We are very proud, as a company, to be sponsoring such a dedicated charity like Bluebell Wood; When the skydive was first mentioned a lot of us were sceptical but once we'd done a bit of research into the cause and seen the fantastic work Bluebell Wood do we were all keen to start collecting sponsors. 15,000 feet higher I'm sure we will all still feel the same!”

Established in 2001 by brothers, Damian and James Edwards, Stock Displays started life with three people storing their limited product range in a small container. The company has grown and now has a warehouse, manufacturing and warehouse unit close to Robin Hood Airport in Yorkshire.

For those interested in statistics the British Parachute Association says in its literature: “The novice is strapped to an experienced instructor. The dual control parachute lets the novice practice canopy control and the instructor controls the landing. The injury rate is about 1.1 injuries/1000jumps (about 1 injury per 900 jumps) and varies only a little by gender (slightly higher risk for women). The fatality rate is about 0.21 per 100,000 jumps (1 in 470,000) and there were no tandem fatalities in the UK in the last 20 year block studied (1994-2013).”

Bluebell Wood provides care and support to families of children with a shortened life expectancy by providing 24 hour respite care and home support. There are only 43 children's hospices in the country so Bluebell Wood cover a massive area, containing parts of Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. It costs over £3 million a year to provide this vital service to the children and families in the region. Bluebell Wood receive less than five percent statutory funding so it relies heavily on fund-raising and volunteers.
