Fire alert: a sign started a blaze in Wolverhampton

The cause was a neon sign catching fire at around 7.45am this morning as workers arrived on Monday morning. Fire crews were called who quickly sealed off the area and tackled the blaze using a long ladder and hoses according to the manager of Costa Coffee in Victoria Street.

The blaze was brought under control very quickly and the shopping centre was reopened later in the morning

The sign containing LED lights was due for replacement and was completely destroyed. The blaze was brought under control very quickly and the shopping centre was reopened later in the morning. At one stage all National Express Coaches had to be diverted away from the city centre with major traffic disruption in the area.

The shopping centre has more than 100 stores plus restaurants and cafes, and lies close to the bus, metro and train hubs.
