Visitors to the Special Olympic Games 2019 opening ceremony didn’t miss a thing thanks to LED video displays throughout the Zayed Sports Stadium in Abu Dhabi where it was held.

The video displays and floor projections provided coverage of entertainment from all angles

Onlookers experienced entertainment from celebrities such as Avril Lavigne and the Global Unified Choir from all angles of the stage.

Global audio-visual supplier, Creative Technology (CT) worked alongside client People to provide all live video technology for both the opening and closing ceremony.

To bring the impressive performances to life, CT supplied a 600sq m upstage screen, 270sq m of relay screens, a 580sq m LED floor, a 90sq m tracking screen, and 2500sq m of mapped floor projection using RZ31 k Panasonic laser projectors.

In addition to this, a 10m diameter flying disc incorporating lighting, pyro and a 9m diameter LED screen rose up 30m from the stage during the ceremony. The disc tracked back over the main LED screen, relaying show content throughout.

“For the LED we utilised our new HDMI 2.0 & 12G SDI kit to maintain fully redundant 4k @ 60 4:4:4 uncompressed workflow from the media server to screen,” explains Tom Stocks, CT’s senior video engineer.

Both the opening and closing ceremonies were amazing, our client, People, did a fantastic job bringing this production to life

To manage all LED scaling and mapping, CT operated a remote screen management system comprised of linked Barco E2 and S3s.

All projection, LED control and image processing were integrated on a centralised fully redundant network ring controlled from front of house, utilising CT’s new 1G and 10G fibre networking solutions.

Founded in 1968, the Special Olympics is a sporting competition for people with intellectual disabilities.

The competition took place between March 14th to 21st and welcomed over 7,500 athletes from 190 nations. This is the first time the sporting event has been held in the Middle East/North Africa region.

Dan Hughes, CT’s senior project manager adds: “Both the opening and closing ceremonies were amazing, our client, People, did a fantastic job bringing this production to life. We want to congratulate all the athletes that have participated in the games over the last week.

“It has been inspirational to watch and a pleasure to have been part of such an uplifting event.”
