Digital signage aids parking problem

When trying to park at a busy shopping centre, in one of Britain’s capital cities, it can be frustrating crawling around looking for a space.

SWARCO Traffic Variable Message Signs will attract retailers and aid customer experience

However, the Abbey Centre in Belfast, Northern Ireland, have decided that turning to SWARCO Traffic is the best solution to help customers, and attract new retail partners.

SWARCO have subsequently installed a new parking guidance system, which will ease congestion and inform drivers where spaces are, and how many are available.

There are now seven Variable Message Signs (VMS) installed, which respond to signals sent by parking count sensors, which are tactically placed in the car park. These sensors are responsible for providing information on the number of spaces available, and will then guide customers to the space.

Abbey Centre manager, Mark Stewart, says: “SWARCO designed, installed and managed the process seamlessly with all works occurring out of hours to minimise inconvenience to shoppers, retailers and all stakeholders. The entire process was effortless—the company’s experience, knowledge and enthusiasm for the project was apparent from the get go.”

SWARCO’s PGS Management will also provide Abbey Centre’s management team with vital information to keep things running smoothly, which is sent using GPRS.

The VMS will also display peak times and information that will benefit the customers. The signs can be adjusted depending on the information sent from the sensors.

Managing director at SWARCO, Jeremy Cowling, says: “The team installed and commissioned all of the signage and detectors over four days, working overnight to complete the project ahead of schedule. Now installed, Abbey Centre has been able to swiftly move on to undertake the rest of its upgrades as planned.”
