York shoppers guided by the lights

York’s new 339,000sq ft Vangarde shopping mall is no walk in the park for shoppers.

York’s massive new Vangarde shopping centre is illuminated by two monoliths featuring LED illuminated text supplied by Applelec and Blue Raptor Signs

Housing the region’s largest M&S and only John Lewis, with sports and community facilities, there is more than a small chance of getting lost amongst the labyrinth of retail choices.

Blue Raptor Signs and Applelec have joined forces to provide the park, and its busy shoppers, with over 80 post-mounted wayfinding signs, including two free standing monoliths.

The 6m-high monoliths consist of internal steel frames with a curved external clad and LED illuminated text. Applelec stocked the SloanLED V Series 2 LEDs which advertise the park’s various restaurant and shopping chains.

In recent years, with the resurgence in the economy of investment in large-scale retail outlets and office blocks, illuminated totem signs have become a more popular choice for developers, as professional exteriors are needed to draw in custom.

Standing at 6m in height, the scale of these monoliths meant careful planning was required to ensure they were structurally sound

Matt Wilson of Blue Raptor Signs, says: “Applelec did a great job fabricating these totems in a very short lead-time. They adapted to last minute specification changes, delivered them on time and pulled out all the stops to do a great job, as per usual. As our favourite trade supplier, we wouldn’t have trusted anyone else to undertake such an important project.”

The new development aims to achieve an ‘excellent’ rating from BREEAM, the sustainable assessment method, by using environmentally-friendly elements throughout the design, including energy efficient LEDs in the signage.

Sam Armstrong, Applelec sales director, says: “Standing at 6m in height, the scale of these monoliths meant careful planning was required to ensure they were structurally sound. Applelec have recently appointed a design engineer who will now be working on similarly complex projects to provide customer support for signage where location or environmental factors can dictate the design and construction of a sign.”
