William Smith has launched 3M Cooling Film, a new reflective performance film for trucks, buses, vans, and other commercial vehicles.

Applied to a vehicle's roof, 3M Cooling Film is designed to reflect more than 85% of solar radiation, reducing heat build-up inside the vehicle while helping to lower cooling demand and running costs without using any additional energy.

The film can be installed like other vehicle graphics using standard tools and techniques, allowing vehicle wrappers and graphics installers to offer a new product to their existing fleet customers.

The film features a hard-coat finish developed to resist dirt, chemicals, and everyday wear, while 3M’s Comply and Controltac adhesive technologies allow for easier positioning and clean application.

Lindsay Hutchinson, head of marketing at William Smith Group 1832, says: "Fleet operators are always looking for ways to reduce running costs and 3M Cooling Film gives installers a new way to help them. It goes on like the graphics they already apply, so it's a natural addition for any business already working with fleets."

3M Cooling Film combines a highly reflective surface with high thermal emissivity, deflecting sunlight and releasing absorbed heat away from the roof. According to 3M, the film can keep vehicle roofs between 5°C and 16°C cooler and interiors up to 5.5°C cooler, depending on the application and conditions.

William Smith has highlighted refrigerated trailers as a particularly strong use case for the film, noting that by reducing the heat entering through the roof, the film allows the refrigeration unit to work less intensely, helping to reduce fuel and energy costs.

The same principle applies to delivery vans, where both drivers and temperature-sensitive goods benefit from a cooler load space, as well as buses where lower cabin temperatures improve passenger comfort.

Hutchinson says: "We expect strong interest from refrigerated transport and delivery fleets in particular. Every commercial vehicle our customers already wrap is now a potential cooling film job too.”

William Smith also recently won ‘Best Place to Work’ at the 2026 North East Business Awards, collecting the title at the Grand Final on October 1st at Hardwick Hall Hotel in Sedgefield, County Durham.

The win follows the film supplier's listing as one of The Sunday Times Best Places to Work 2026 earlier this year.

Hutchinson adds: "This award belongs to our people. Everyone here has helped shape the culture we have today, through the feedback they give us and the way they look after our customers and each other. To be recognised alongside the best businesses in the North East is something the whole team can be proud of.”
