The Global Poster Gallery has officially opened with its inaugural exhibition titled How to Make a Poster, at London Transport Museum.

The gallery has been formed with the help of media group Global as well as The Wolfson Foundation, a UK charity that awards grants to support excellence in science, medicine, health, education, and the arts and humanities.

Global is the official sponsor of the Gallery, giving the space access to its wide range of radio and outdoor advertising opportunities.

The museum has run a number of events throughout October including during half term and has events such as Posters and Posers and the Art and Poster Store Tour through November.

For the first time artworks and designs from the museum’s world-class collection of over 30,000 advertising posters will be showcased alongside loans from other collections.

Entry is free with Museum admission and includes posters dating back to 1908. The collection also includes work by Tom Eckersley, Abram Games, Hans Unger, Edward McKnight Kauffer, Man Ray, and Dora M Batty, the most prolific female designer commissioned by the Underground.

Poster commissioning started on the Underground in 1908 by Frank Pick, chief executive of London Transport, who believed good design enriched life, commissioning more and more adventurous and artistic posters as time went on.

London Transport Museum states: “Over three decades, Pick cultivated an extensive network of talented artists and designers. This legacy established London Transport as a leading patron of the arts and brought the capital’s transport system critical and international acclaim for its graphic art and design.

“The new Global Poster Gallery at London Transport Museum in Covent Garden will celebrate this important design heritage and its global influence.”
