Gateshead Railway Quarter is part of a larger UKSPF-funded initiative to rejuvenate the local economy
Astley, a sign-making business based in Gateshead, has highlighted its recent work with the local council as a demonstration of its commitment to the community’s pride and heritage.
Two high-profile projects which Astley has been involved with are the placemaking signage at Railway Quarter and hoarding artwork at Maidens Walk. The company says the process of the projects reflects Astley’s commitment as a UK manufacturer as all the work was done at its Gateshead facility.
The Gateshead Railway Quarter is currently home to a growing hub of independent businesses and has been reimagined as a creative destination, making it a prime location for a refreshed piece of signage.
The final designed was developed to reflect the area’s industrial character while also “enhancing visibility and footfall”, according to Astley.
Mark Ferguson, MP for Gateshead, said on LinkedIn: “So much positive feedback about Gateshead’s Railway Quarter. Great to see this part of our town being celebrated, and fantastic local signage by Astley too!”
Astley’s work on Maidens Walk meant utilising 150 metres of student artwork as part hoarding which lifts and rejuvenates the area. The artwork, which is originally made by students from Gateshead College, is meant to deter graffiti and celebrate local culture through public art.

“As a UK manufacturer based in Gateshead, we remain committed to investing in regional talent and helping shape the future of our town.”
Astley’s latest collaboration with Gateshead Council is part of a long partnership with the council which has included work like the rebranding of The Glasshouse Internation Centre for Music and the maintenance and installation of the Tyne Bridge sign each year.
