At this year’s Sign and Digital UK, I spoke to Gerard Metrailler, Corel's vice president of products ahead of the company’s new software launch, CorelDraw Graphics Suite 2017.

CorelDraw Graphics Suite 2017 features Live Sketch, which replicates the feel of pen and paper

Now available with either a perpetual license (one off payment) or subscription fee (monthly or annually), with a free 15-day trial also available, Corel has decided to update its software every year from now on.

Metrailler says that for a design software, it is competitively priced compared to Adobe Creative Cloud.

Metrailler highlights customisability as an important feature of the updated software, saying: “We believe in choice for our users.”

You can also switch to tablet mode, which has features designed for this way of working, for example, larger icons, making it easier to use on the go.

We believe in choice for our users

One exciting new tool in CorelDraw Graphics Suite 2017 is Live Sketch, which allows users to draw on a pen-enabled device due to a clever tool that interprets sketching styles.

Metrailler notes he wants people to let go of the mathematics and have fun with design.

Métrailler says: “Taking advantage of the latest advancements in Windows hardware and the power of machine learning, the new LiveSketch tool in CorelDRAW 2017 brings the fun and creative experience of pen and paper to vector illustration for the first time. In this new creative environment, technology in effect, disappears.”

Other new features include enhanced nodes, handles, and vector preview, and a touch-friendly user interface.
