Pupils’ banner asks ‘when will we learn?’

In a thought-provoking demonstration of the power of signage, Milton Keynes Academy pupils, with help from artists and sign-makers, have created a banner that marks the centenary of World War One.

The banner features a stylised paper plane, an idea created during MK Gallery’s workshops, and the words are the result of brainstorming session

“It is absolutely fantastic that the Key Stage 3 pupils have been able to see their design efforts become reality. We are extremely grateful to both Global Erecting Signs (GESS) Ltd and Signarama Milton Keynes for all their help and support in enabling this project to become a reality,” says Dara Carroll, principle of MK Academy.

The art project entitled ‘Frontline’ gave the pupils the opportunity to work with artist Alicja Rogalska in workshops that helped get their creative juices flowing. After visiting the Imperial War Museum in London, the pupils’ final idea was a war-themed banner for the exterior of Milton Keynes Academy.

The team at GESS Ltd worked tirelessly over a very hot Saturday to install the banner whilst Signarama Milton Keynes assisted with the preparation of print ready artwork so that the banner could be printed in time for installation

Sponsoring the project was sign-makers Signarama Milton Keynes, and signage installation company Global Erecting Sign Services (GESS), which saw the students’ designs go from postcards to a large-scale 12.7 x 6.6m banner. The banner was printed onto mesh and installed by GESS, while Signarama provided the artwork.

Carroll explains: “The team at GESS Ltd worked tirelessly over a very hot Saturday to install the banner whilst Signarama Milton Keynes assisted with the preparation of print ready artwork so that the banner could be printed in time for installation.”

The MK Gallery workshops are part of Great War MK, a project funded by Milton Keynes Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, and led by the Arts and Heritage Alliance Milton Keynes.
