The global 3D printing materials market for the aerospace industry is expected to reach $535.1m by 2024, according to Frost & Sullivan

The firm will also supply Ultimaker Cura software, and materials for use in its European facilities. The manufacturer will benefit from Ultimaker’s products in its production of tools, jigs, and fixtures, and printing of lightweight design parts using composite materials.

According to the 3D print firm, it was chosen by Airbus due to ‘its ease of use, reliable results, and open technology, which meets the stringent requirements the aerospace industry has in regard to 3D printed applications, such as jigs and fixtures, non-flying parts and tools.’

Depending on the success of the installation of a number of Ultimaker S5 printers, and continuous access to Ultimaker Cura software at its European facilities, the firm hopes to expand the collaboration further into its worldwide teams.

Strict rules regarding safety and certifications can make manufacturing and model-making workflows complicated, especially for engineers in the aerospace industry

With a recent Frost & Sullivan report revealing that the global 3D printing materials market for the aerospace industry is expected to reach $536.1m (£406m), Airbus will now utilise Ultimaker’s portfolio of 3D products.

The aircraft specialist says: “Airbus has historically embraced 3D printing, and the partnership with Ultimaker further underscores their commitment to further utilising 3D printing within their facilities.”

Commenting on the achievement, Jos Burger, chief executive officer at Ultimaker says: “We’re very proud that Airbus selected Ultimaker. Strict rules regarding safety and certifications can make manufacturing and model-making workflows complicated, especially for engineers in the aerospace industry.

“I am glad that our certified solution and the possibility to print with composite materials, enables these engineers to keep innovating. The team at Airbus can fully rely on our dedicated global sales and partner network for full support.”
