The benefits of choosing wisely

Being over-capacity and unable to take any more work is a business’s and a sign firm’s worst nightmare. However, with some advice and thinking surrounding the type of work accepted from The Growth Company, sign-makers can get the best of their business, and take that influx of orders.

Paul Holt found that spending more time on artistic signage was more beneficial to Neon Creations’ business

This has been the case with Neon Creations, which is owned by Tony and Catherine Spink, who have almost 30 years of experience in producing neon signage. The pair can boast clients such as the BBC, River Island, and Barburrito - a restaurant chain.

The Business Growth Hub worked its way around the problem, by giving one member of the workforce extra responsibilities, allowing the firm to bring in another employee. Neon Creations can now offer a quicker turnaround time, which means the company can now take on that extra workload.

Catherine Spink comments: “We had become so busy fulfilling our commercial orders that it left no time for innovation. By reorganising the team, we have been able to create capacity to develop new products and concepts.
“This is a niche business, and it takes time to develop the skills needed to meet the demands of our customers. Working with the Business Growth Hub means that we’ve been able to focus on what the needs of the business are, as our adviser listened to us, affirmed our decisions, and gave us the confidence to grow.”

In addition, Tony’s artwork already attracts attention online via social media with any marketing effort. By reorganising their workforce, Tony and Catherine now have the additional capacity for Tony to focus on creating and actively promoting these higher-value products

Paul Holt, specialist manufacturing adviser at Business Growth Hub, comments: “The business review I carried out with Tony and Catherine identified that, given the artistic value and increased time needed to create unique one-of-a-kind pieces, the time Tony spent on bespoke artwork projects was more profitable to the business than time spent producing signs for bars and restaurants.”

Holt concludes: “In addition, Tony’s artwork already attracts attention online via social media with any marketing effort. By reorganising their workforce, Tony and Catherine now have the additional capacity for Tony to focus on creating and actively promoting these higher-value products and therefore, increase the company’s profits going forward.”
