More than 30 employees at ‘Wales’ largest road traffic sign manufacturer’, Monwel Signs and Services, have been made redundant following the company’s insolvency

Staff are believed to have been given half an hour to leave the premises as the company informed the workforce it was entering insolvency proceedings and they were out of a job.

The company, which defined itself as the largest road traffic sign manufacturer in Wales, closed down its offices and ceased trading at the end of July, just a few months after scooping three awards for success in social enterprise.

The business was credited with turning a loss of £250,000 into an estimated profit of £136,000, and becoming the market leader for sign manufacturing in Wales. At the time of the awards, the business employed 32 disabled people.

They have shown total disregard and disrespect to the staff who have made a contribution to their business

Trade union Unite’s legal officer for Wales, John Toner, comments: “We are extremely disappointed by the lack of consultation [between the trade union’s members and the company]. We feel angry and bitterly let down.

“They have shown total disregard and disrespect to the staff who have made a contribution to their business. These are vulnerable people, some of which are in sheltered accommodation and employed similar to Remploy.”
