Manchester-based Fastsigns has highlighted an industry trend which is seeing sign-makers continue to diverge from their 'traditional' roles and embrace a much wider spectrum of work.

The realisation of the trend comes after the firm completed a number of unusual commissions, a recent example of which saw it create a series of colourful giant ducks to support a charity campaign.

“It was a great idea and the ducks looked fantastic. They certainly drew attention with their bright, eye-catching colours and really helped to publicise what is a great cause,” comments Fastsigns’ Richard Wedgwood.

The commision shows that the continued evolution of machine and material technology is allowing the industry to become much more flexible and branch out more firmly into sectors such as bespoke event dressing.

The quackers commission were created as each year local firms hold a charity duck race to help raise money for children’s charity Brainwaves—which helps youngsters that have suffered brain injuries.

Seen by thousands of enthusiastic onlookers, companies paid £1,000 to have the 1 x 1m ducks wrapped with their branding.
