Precision engineering meets printing

In amongst the intricate work of engineers building the race cars of the future, Epson held the launch of its new SureColor SC-S wide-format printers for signage and display graphics. As an official partner of the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team, their factory was the ideal location to find out the details.

The new devices go by the names of the SureColor SC-S40600, SureColor SC-S60600, and SureColor SC-S80600 (to be released in March). The SC-S40600 is the entry-level, affordable printer of the bunch and is ideal for high quality POS graphics and signage. The SC-S60600 steps it up for high volume production with a quick turn around. Using the devices, applications include signage, POP, billboard, backlit, photo prints, wallpaper, and even vehicle wrapping.

“The key features of the new SureColor SC-S range that we are launching today are maximum productivity, extremely high print quality, exceptional reliability, and reduced total cost of ownership compared to the current range that have been available for some time,” says Phil McMullin, sales manager, professional graphics, Epson (UK).

The new features of the SureColor SC-S series have been designed with one purpose in mind: to improve the printing experience for the user. It is because of this that an inspection panel with LED has been fitted for better vision inside the machine, two different speeds depending on the material being used, and a new stand design that requires no set up. Ink development has resulted in the GS3 and GS3 with Red, which increases the pigment density of ink compared to the previous GS2.

McMullin adds: “These printers are very important and stand out in the market because they incorporate four years of investment in research and development that Epson Japan has put in. We took a huge amount of feedback from end users and reseller partners around the globe and incorporated that into hugely improved printer chassis design, feeding and take up systems, improved ink chemistry to reduce the cost of ownership, and improve the colour gamut particularly with the addition of red ink.

Phil McMullin, sales manager, professional graphics, Epson (UK) says they have worked hard to reduce the amount of operator involvement needed

“Critically we have worked hard to reduce the amount of operator involvement needed to get out a perfect print. What we understand from our customers is that they want to load a huge variety of media onto our printers, press print, and expect to get an exceptional quality print out at a very rapid print speed first time, every time.”

Stepping up a gear

Of course, there is more to Epson’s choice of product launch location than being a partner of the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team. The companies share values that, in both of their respective industries, sets them apart.

McMullin explains: “The Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team principals of precision engineering and performance at the highest level are principles that we feel are embodied in the new Epson SureColor range of signage printers. The team at Mercedes were very generous in allowing us to use this facility to highlight the synergies between the two companies: the desire for performance and to be the best amongst equals.”

The group technical innovation director of Photobox has praised the SureColor printers, five of which installed are the SC-S60600, revealing that they have boosted productivity by close to 20 percent. The printers have allowed the company to expand their product range and they have witnessed increased demand.

In an exclusive sneak peek, Epson also revealed the latest addition to the SureColor SC-P series line-up, the 64-inch width SC-P20000. Being released in March, the machine is based on an aqueous ink set and replaces the SP-11880 with a better print speed—rep-resenting Epson’s fourth launch of the day that will see it continue with its aim to exceed expectations.
