Manufacturing pride

Many people say ‘we don’t make things anymore’, and to some extent that is true, but if they just spent 10 minutes paging through each edition, they would realise just how creative, innovative, and productive our sector is.

Whether it is all the amazing plethora of products, machines, and materials that come together at events such as Sign and Digital UK or Signlink Live, the fantastic work of firms such as Cowen Signs, or what can be manufactured on the amazing CNC technology available to today’s sign-maker, we really are part of a thriving and buoyant industry sector.

Just take the comments from James Clarke from the aforementioned Cowen Signs as a case in point: “We have now grown alongside our customer base and advancements in technology have enabled us to keep ahead of the customers wants and needs. We are fully equipped to respond at a moment’s notice.”

This level of initiative and forward thinking from an SME is very positive, and really points to what makes the UK sign industry such a strong player when compared to its European counterparts. That is primarily is that we do have a strong heritage in the country of ‘making things’, and exploiting the very latest technological advances to our advantage.

A good example of this if you look at our recent Tech Buzz special article on the Roland DG VersaUV LEF-200. This ‘magic box’ really is an ingenious printer, developed specifically to help sign-makers and graphics businesses diversify into offering promotional and personalised print products to their existing customer base.

“You want 100 branded pens to go with your new corporate identity, signage, and wayfinding scheme printed to the exact same spot colours? Well yes, yes we can do that no problem.” The key word here is diversification, and it is what makes our sector so strong, so make sure you stay in touch with such technological developments, and stay ahead of the curve.
