Signage and display supplier, Signwaves, has bolstered its printing capabilities by upgrading to two new Nyala flatbed printers from swissQprint.

Signwaves has opted for two six-colour Nyala 4s, replacing older swissQprint models. The business chose an inkset that included white, varnish, and primer, with one machine incorporating a 3.2m roll-to-roll option.

Founded in 1989 the Norfolk-based business specialises in producing advertising, signage, display, and presentation products for a range of major brands and retailers. It also caters for over 2,000 trade resellers including a network of sign and print companies, agencies, exhibition contractors, and shop fitters.

The business prints a high percentage of its output on rigid materials, often for the outdoor market where durability is critical. The white ink and primer print head configuration chosen by Signwaves is designed to be optimised for offerings such as the black high-pressure laminate used in the company's branded chalkboard output.

Signwaves first installed swissQprint technology in 2016, when an Impala and Nyala were installed to satisfy an increasing demand for full-colour digital output. Signwaves chairman Mark Ford reportedly chose to upgrade to the newer Nyala 4s after finding out about its reported improvements in productivity, quality, and sustainability.

Explaining his choice, Ford says: “Eight years ago we partnered with swissQprint and were immediately impressed with what they could do. We have always been incredibly thorough when testing new equipment. For us, swissQprint ticked all the boxes and the fact that we have returned to them for two new Nyalas is testament to their technology and reliability.”

Both Nyala machines operate at a maximum of 206sg m/h, a 35% percent increase compared to previous models. The machines also offer the company’s latest generation of printheads, a 1350dpi resolution and smaller droplet size than previous models, designed to deliver sharper edges and finer lines with smoother transitions across an increased colour gamut.

Alongside the need for quality and volume output, sustainability was also reportedly a key factor in the company’s decision to upgrade its swissQprint machines. Ford comments: “We’re on a journey to make the business carbon neutral by 2030.

“We produce our own electricity through solar energy and use this to power our production, including our new Nyalas. Their incredible energy efficiency will ensure we deliver the cost-effective, sustainable products our clients demand.”

Erskine Stewart, managing director of swissQprint UK, adds: “We’re delighted that Signwaves have committed to upgrading with us. The high quality and fast turnaround of their work makes the Nyala perfect for the business. It’s great to see them choose two new machines and build on the strong relationship we have built over the years.”
