Oxford-based print provider, Mayfield Press, has installed a new swissQprint Kudu flatbed printer, with the aim of increasing output and quality while reducing operating costs in its wide-format business.

Mayfield Press provides a range of value-added print solutions, specialising in short run applications for point of sale (POS), signage, gifting, packaging, and office refurbishments.

The business has been a swissQprint customer since 2018, having initially invested in a swissQprint Nyala 3.

Three years later, Mayfield Press upgraded to add a varnish channel, unlocking further signage and wayfinding opportunities.

The newly-installed Kudu, which replaces the Nyala, offers four colours plus white and varnish. With this setup, which uses swissQprint's Q1280i high-resolution print heads, the business is able to match print quality that previously required a six-colour print process.

Wide-format is reportedly the fastest growing part of Mayfield’s business, having expanded by 32% last year.

The CMYK colour configuration of the new Kudu has also reportedly reduced ink usage, improving sustainability and cost efficiencies while maintaining Mayfield’s existing print quality.

Mayfield Press managing director, Spencer Slee, says: "The swissQprint technology has proved to be incredibly reliable – that is critical to our market, as we can't afford any downtime. We wanted a machine that can handle high output as well as high-quality print and that's exactly what the Kudu does."

The 3.2m x 2m machine can operate at a maximum speed of 341sq m/h, while consuming an average of 2.2 kilowatt hours of electricity – the same as a standard kettle.

Steve Pridham, sales manager at swissQprint, adds: "Our technology is the right fit for Mayfield Press, and its upgrade makes perfect sense.

“The four-colour specification has helped them to reduce ink usage, while maintaining the high-quality levels of print that swissQprint's printers are renowned for. It's been great to be part of the business's continuing success."

Mayfield Press was purchased by web-to-print and automation specialist, Print Evolved, in 2021, with Mayfield operating as one of four key sites under the Print Evolved umbrella, specialising in wide-format and litho print. Print Evolved owns further specialist sites in central London, Kent, and Surrey.
