St James's Hospital is based in Harehills in Leeds, where FASTSIGNS Leeds carried out the work
Signage and graphics company, FASTSIGNS Leeds, has supported Candlelighters charity by helping to transform a specialist children’s cancer treatment wing at St James’s Hospital in Leeds.
Candlelighters is a Yorkshire-based charity which supports children and families dealing with cancer. The project was undertaken in order to create a brighter and more engaging environment for visitors and patients who visit the hospital wing.
All together FASTSIGNS Leeds contributed bespoke signage and environmental graphics for the Children’s Radiotherapy Department and the children’s day unit at St James’s Hospital. In total FASTSIGNS produced and installed over 300sq m of custom self-adhesive vinyl graphics across walls, floors, and ceiling tiles.
The company worked alongside Candlelighters and Scamp Creative in order to produce the calming and imaginative graphics which include animals and butterflies for children to count. The project also meant working within a busy hospital setting, requiring careful planning and phased access.
The work was carried out by FASTSIGNS Leeds on a voluntary basis
Andy Simpson, director at FASTSIGNS Leeds, comments: “It was important that the space didn’t feel like a typical hospital. The goal was to create an environment that could comfort, reassure, and provide distraction for children during what is, understandably, a very challenging time. Some rooms now give children something to engage with, whether that’s counting butterflies on the walls or spotting animals on the ceiling. If we can make their experience even a little more comfortable, then it’s totally worthwhile.”
FASTSIGNS work was carried out on a voluntary basis, with support from suppliers like Antalis and Metamark. The project was completed with the help of the entire team, with up to seven team members (including sales) supporting installations at any one time.
“It was also fantastic to see the entire team come together and volunteer their time to help bring this project to life, showing how much can be achieved when a community works together to support children and families, during such an important, often difficult, time,” adds Simpson.
