EPIC Media has challenged UK authorities to overhaul their graphics and signage communications, ahead of major changes to recycling policies due to come into effect on March 31st

Vehicle wrapping and graphics expert, EPIC Media, has called on councils to provide clearer messaging following recycling reforms that first came into effect across the UK last year.
Simpler Recycling is a UK government initiative, effective from April 2025, that standardises recycling collections across England with the aim of making it easier for households and businesses to recycle.
The reforms, led by the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, introduce greater consistency in recycling collections, including mandatory weekly food waste services for most households.
Most residents in England will see significant changes to their bin collections by March 31st. However, a recent BBC News report has highlighted that almost one in four councils were not on track to introduce weekly food waste collections by the original deadline, with 79 councils telling the BBC that they would not meet that deadline.
EPIC Media is urging local authorities and waste operators to prioritise visible, consistent public messaging as food waste collections expand and change.
Rather than viewing vehicle and fleet graphics purely as branding, EPIC positions them as an “ongoing communications platform.” According to EPIC, rapid wrap solutions and changeable graphic systems will allow authorities to update messaging in line with phased rollouts, policy adjustments, and resident education campaigns.
Nicola Welfare, general manager at EPIC Media, says: “With Simpler Recycling, the pressure on councils is very real.
“Clear street-level communication can reinforce new food waste services, explain what goes where, and build public confidence during a period of change.”
As authorities review fleet procurement, depot capacity, and container distribution, EPIC Media is encouraging waste teams and communications departments to align operational planning with visible, consistent messaging.
EPIC feels that when collection rules vary or messaging is unclear from fleet graphics or other signage, contamination increases and participation drops.
Speaking about the impact of these fleet graphics, Welfare states: “Waste collection vehicles are among the most visible assets local authorities operate, travelling through every neighbourhood on a weekly basis.
“EPIC Media has already worked with councils and operators across the UK to support first time food waste rollouts, recycling rebrands, and service changes through high impact vehicle wraps and adaptable messaging systems.”
