Students will be judged on the concept and activation of their projects for sports brand Nike

Recent award winner, KGK Genix, has gone from strength to strength as it has supported charities, the industry, and students. Recently the company has launched its Student Retail Design & Careers Competition to help school students learn about print.

The company has teamed up with the Art and Design department at Hertford Regional College to offer students the experiences associated with a live campaign, and creating window display concepts and activations for some of the world's biggest brands.

The competition was developed by Matt Walsh, operations director at KGK Genix in Harlow. Walsh says: “As a creative agency, it’s really important that we encourage a new generation of designers with fresh ideas into our industry. The competition provides a platform to showcase just how exciting a career in retail design and print can be.”

The six-month programme started in December 2022 and will run until the final stage of the competition in May 2023.

KGK Genix will host insight days over the coming months, giving students the chance to work alongside the design, studio, and production teams. This year’s creative brief is for sports brand, Nike, and its Women in Sport campaign.

Sara Saunders, curriculum area manager for Art and Design at Hertford Regional College, comments: “Hertford Regional College is very excited about the opportunity to work with KGK Genix on this competition. The opportunity to take on a live brief will give our Graphic Design and Visual Merchandising students amazing insight into the industry, making their learning relevant, and for the winners the opportunity of paid internships.

Entrants will work with KGK Genix at seven key stages of project development

“Work experience is so important to students studying creative vocational courses as it raises awareness of the career opportunities open to them after their studies, or one of our university level courses.”

Students will also learn about different materials, focusing on their sustainable credentials like printed vinyl and films, fabrics, and display board.

Graham Pitts, group managing director of KGK Genix, adds: “This competition not only provides students with the opportunity to take a huge step forward in starting a career in an already competitive industry, but also actively encourages new talent into our industry.”

The final stage will see students present their concepts to a judging panel formed of members from Nike’s marketing team, retail designers at KGK Genix, and the chief executive officer of the Herts Chamber of Commerce.

Three winners will win a six-week work placement at KGK Genix, where they will work as part of the design and production team on live retail campaigns.
