Mutoh unveils new tactical weapon

It seems that the upcoming FESPA show is set to be a battle royale, as the titans of the wide-format print technology sector come together to duke it out. And it seems that Mutoh has set itself up for a heavyweight title challenge with the new Value Jet 1638UR.

The new ValueJet 1638UR is a 64” (162cm) wide dual head, dual lamp UV LED roll-to-roll printer and can print white, colour, and clear ink simultaneously

Kenji Yasuhara, Mutoh Europe’s managing director, sets out its game plan: “We have seen a considerable increase of sales of our UV LED printers during the past year. The new Value Jet 1638UR will offer both installed-base (eco)solvent users as well as (offset/screen) printers an opportunity to expand their current product offering towards specialty applications and prints with high added value.”

He continues: “The VJ-1638UR will enable short-run printing on the widest range of substrates on the market. Users will also be able to process not only all typical sign and display substrates, but also thin film substrates that may be too heat-sensitive for water-based resin or solvent printers.

Also, all kinds of non-white substrates can be printed such as transparent, coloured or black media, fluorescent paper, metallic, mirror film, etc

“Also, all kinds of non-white substrates can be printed such as transparent, coloured or black media, fluorescent paper, metallic, mirror film, etc.  Our clear inks offer the possibility to create multi-layer prints and spot varnish effects. Actually, the only limit is the creativity of the users themselves.”

The printer integrates two latest generation piezo drop on demand print heads producing print resolutions up to 1440 x 1440dpi. Key to the platform is Mutoh’s new US11 UV LED CMYK, White and Clear 0% VOC inks, which enable simultaneous white, colour, and clear printing. The ValueJet 1638UR will be displayed at Mutoh’s booth at Fespa (Hall 1.2 – B20).

The new platform has come at a critical time for Mutoh, as the leading pack of major manufacturers such as Mimaki, Roland DG, EFI, Canon, Agfa Graphics, and HP all vie for superiority and market share growth in the sector.

Sticking it further to the competition, Mutoh will also introduce its Performance Jet 2508UF to Europe at FESPA, which boasts variable drop greyscale print heads and edge-to-edge borderless printing. A true flatbed at 4m x 8m, the PJ-2508UF uses two UV LED lamps and can print on thickness of up to 100mm.

Yasuhara adds: "We are delighted to present the PJ-2508UF for the first time in the EMEA business area at FESPA. The Performance Jet will be staged next to our new roll-to-roll UV LED ValueJet 1638UR printer model which will also be presented for the first time in Berlin next week.

"With the addition of these two new products, Mutoh will be able to offer a complete portfolio of UV LED printers ranging from desktop object flatbed printers to wide format hybrid, roll-to-roll and true flatbed solutions."
