Sign-making Industry in 2020?

As the end of the year is fast approaching and we look ahead to the future, Genevieve Lewis asks: “What can we expect from the sign-making industry in 2020?”

Choice is the word

“Choice” is going to be a real buzzword for Hybrid and Mimaki in 2020 and it falls into every area of the industry. The current line-up from Mimaki offers an unrivalled choice in hardware, choice in inks and choice in processes. These all enable sign-makers to offer their customers a choice in products and with that comes more opportunity to retain business, attract new customers and make more profit.

With the raft of new products that Mimaki launched at The Print Show, let alone throughout 2019, we’re teeing 2020 up to be a year where the sign making industry can now really offer an incredible breadth of output. Products like the Mimaki UCJV Series of LED UV printer/cutters delivers new and creative print techniques such as the ability to include a clear ink on self-adhesive decals and Mimaki’s latest grand-format printer, the new Mimaki SWJ-320EA, massively reduces the barriers to entry for high quality, competitively priced 3m+ banner printing.

Adding in this sort of extra capability can help boost product ranges and provide more opportunities for sign-making businesses to expand their offering

Adding in this sort of extra capability can help boost product ranges and provide more opportunities for sign-making businesses to expand their offering. Getting the most from your printing and cutting hardware, whatever it is, is always going to be crucial, so whether looking at what you currently have or if you’re planning to invest in new, we’d suggest standing back and asking, ‘what else can I do with it?’ and see where it takes you.

Diversify and prosper.

David Catanach, director, ISA-UK

I believe that 2020 is going to be really exciting for ISA-UK and the sign industry as a whole.  As the recent British Sign Awards showed, the innovation and creativity being shown by professionals in our sector is amazing; with new technologies, materials and processes coming to market.

We are, of course, working within an uncertain political and economic environment.  However, my colleagues and I on the ISA-UK council feel that the opportunities which currently exist, far outweigh the challenges.

Our aim as an association is to support our members but also to challenge.  How can we do things better?  What can we learn from one another? How can we ensure that our industry is continually striving for excellence?

Training and education will continue to be a focus for ISA-UK as we move into 2020. Our online Digital Badge courses are affordable and flexible and appropriate for sign-makers at every stage of their career. Add to this the funded on-site training that ISA-UK members can access via our trusted partners and there is no reason why companies should not be developing the skills of their staff.

The potential for collaboration within our industry, as well as reaching across to complementary sectors, is huge.  By working together more closely, manufacturers, suppliers, installers and specialist service providers can deliver exemplary results to customers and ensure that the sign and graphics industry continues to thrive and set new benchmarks in quality and professionalism.

As a way to promote dialogue and debate, ISA-UK has increased its social media activity and we’d encourage members and non-members alike to engage with us across all platforms and join in the conversation.
