Digital screens that save 95% of energy in sun

A digital display firm has produced an outdoor signage solution which works with bright sunlight rather than using more energy to combat glare.

The reflective LCD solution from Illinois-based Sun Vision Display (a New Vision Display brand) uses less than five watts to operate and is made up of a mirror installed behind the LCD layer.

When sunlight shines through the LCD layer, this is then reflected by the mirror and back to the viewer, making the screen appear brighter. As a result, Sun Vision Display estimates this technology reduces power consumption by 90-95%.

In a demo video, David Sexauer, business development manager of Sun Vision Display compares the LCD reflective technology to standard LED displays.

...the brighter it is outside, the better it looks. There’s no need to fight the sunlight, you can embrace advertising your product to your customer in an outdoor and busy environment

He says: “These things take up so much energy just to fight the sun that our display is taking just a little slice of to illuminate. Our display is very, very low power. It takes less than five watts to operate a 1920 x 1080 [RGB full HD resolution] screen.

“We do have video capability. If you have a moving advertisement, it looks great. So, the brighter it is outside, the better it looks. There’s no need to fight the sunlight, you can embrace advertising your product to your customer in an outdoor and busy environment.”

The screens are available in 32”, 43”, and 55” but for larger sizes, SVD panels can be tiled in 2x2 and 3x3 configurations.
