Billboards poke fun at UK for Brexit

Two European firms have purchased giant billboard space to use the UK’s departure from the EU as an excuse to promote bitcoin currency.

Bitcoin is a decentralised digital currency without a central bank or single administrator. It can be sent from user-to-user through the bitcoin network.

Despite the original idea being to spread a message about bitcoin, the signage actually poked fun at the uncertainty, indecision and time it took for Brexit to be finalised.

Vienna-based exchange Bitpanda and Paris-based hardware provider Ledger purchased 7m by 4m billboard advertising space in 36 places across the UK.

Speaking to blockchain publication Coindesk, Pascal Gauthier, chief executive of Ledger says: “Brexit means taking back control over borders and currency. It’s very UK-centric. Bitcoin is the opposite. It’s a borderless, global technology.”

The financial district of London’s Canary Wharf and a location in Brussels near the European Union building were among those chosen.

Broadcast on Brexit day (Friday January 31st) for 24-hours, the messages on the billboards read: “millions of people can’t be wrong… unless they’re British” and: “let’s take back control, for real”.

Eric Demuth, chief executive officer of Bitpanda adds: “I feel like many people do not see the great impact and were misled by the personal short-term goals of some politicians. No self-promoting politician should be a reason for anyone to be stripped of their freedoms. We want to provoke people to think about the impact their vote has on their lives.”
