Retiree grows $1m print franchise

Having only been in the print industry for three years, retired certified public accountant, Ken Barton, now owns a $1m (£800,000) print franchise.

Having purchased an established Minuteman Press franchise in Dublin, Ohio, in 2015, Barton has significantly grown the business to achieve yearly gross sales of over $1m.

How has Barton achieved such growth in the short amount of time with little experience of print? Being surrounded by an enthusiastic and passionate team and being in the “growing community of Central Ohio” are two of the owner’s self-proclaimed secrets.

Describing what sparked his interest in purchasing a print franchise after 30 years in public practice, Barton says: “I am a businessperson and the business-to-business aspect of the franchise is great.

“I like working normal Monday to Friday business hours and also having ongoing local support. I have learned that there are lots of people in the Minuteman Press organisation out there willing to help. My local field representative Rich DeRosa has been invaluable in training me to be an effective marketer.”

When marketing the business successfully, Barton stresses the importance of learning how to ask the right questions as well as how to listen and identify prospect motivations – skills he learnt from DeRosa.

Barton is the newest member of the Minuteman Press International President’s Million-Dollar Circle and joins husband and wife team, Michael and Lindsey Weber due to the success of their Enfield, CA and Springfield, MA centres, joined earlier this month.

Barton concludes: “Earlier in my career, I believed that the leader of an organisation should focus solely on the client. Now I am convinced that as a business owner, my most important role is to support the team of people at our business so they can help the client. The better I do of supporting the team, the better job the team can do of taking care of our customers.”
