Students at a motoring event used equipment and materials provided by the sign industry to decorate their home-made racing cars at the London Eco-Marathon in July.

The cars are divided by energy type. They either have Internal combustion engine fuels using the usual range of fossil fuels or are battery powered by hydrogen fuel cells and lithium-based batteries.

In the contest held at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park the students used Drytac's SpotOn SynPaper for the graphics racing car designs. As a main sponsor for the event, HP provided all the PC and printing equipment for the student teams to produce their own graphics, including an HP PageWide XL large-format printer running Drytac's SpotOn SynPaper. As a product designed specifically for this HP system, SpotOn SynPaper was the material of choice for the vehicle decals speeding around the track. A printable, matte white, self-adhesive film, SpotOn SynPaper has been developed to be easy to apply with a bubble-free finish. The cars were made from a variety of materials, including polystyrene and silk fibres in order to be as light as possible

SpotOn SynPaper, is a polypropylene film, and is technically recyclable if baled up and delivered in bulk or collected by a recycle firm. The British Plastics Federation (http://www.bpf.co.uk) has a list of firms that offer this service. The film is ideal for vibrant short-term wall and window applications like seasonal retail promotions and trade show graphics. It is simple and clean to remove, thanks to its smart dot pattern and pressure-sensitive polyacrylate adhesive says the manufacturers.

"The Shell Eco-marathon was a really exciting event with the innovation of the teams matched by the speeds of the cars," comments Shaun Holdom, global product manager for Drytac. “We love to see unusual applications for our products and Drytac SpotOn SynPaper graphics, printed on HP PageWide XL technology, worked brilliantly on the track. The event was all about the energy-efficient cars of the future, making it a great setting for our advanced graphics media."

Drytac comments: “SpotOn SynPaper produces excellent results with aqueous and UV inkjet printers, delivering twelve months' durability for interior applications. The 120 micron-thick material is available in 1,016mm-wide rolls.”

The Shell eco-Marathons are held in the California, Singapore and London with the winners going through to a final held later this year in Italy.
