Birmingham brought to life with signage

CSM Live, Hollywood Monster, and Artem are just some of the companies involved

Birmingham was announced as host of the Games back in December 2017

Many printers and sign-makers have been celebrating the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games with a variety of different builds including large signage and graphics.

CSM Live was the official look, wayfinding, and signage provider for the Games and helped in bringing about the crucial visuals that decorated Birmingham.

Centenary Square, The Bull Ring, and Victoria Square all had big splashes of colour via banners, floor graphics, and hoarding boards that helped bring Birmingham to life.

CSM’s city dressing co-ordinator, Anisha Tailor, says: “Being part of an amazing team and seeing Birmingham come to life with all the dressings going up around the city has to be my biggest highlight. It looks so bright and colourful, and the hard work has certainly paid off.”

Speaking about the challenges of the project, Tailor adds: “One thing we are proud of as a team is being able to meet our city dressing deadlines despite the setbacks and obstacles that have come our way throughout. It has made things a little more challenging, but we have managed to find solutions.”

With its headquarters in Orpington, as well as locations across the globe, CSM Live is an environmental branding, signage, and live experience company that provides experiences and retail installations for businesses and sporting events.

The last time the Games were held in England was in Manchester in 2002

CSM was appointed the provider of look, wayfinding, and signage for the Games back in May 2021 with the task of providing look and feel, field of play branding, wayfinding, information signage, sponsor recognition, media treatments, and city dressing.

Speaking about the partnership ahead of the 2022 Games, Giles Stanford, director of global events at CSM, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Birmingham 2022 as we seek to deliver a sustainable, innovative, and carbon-friendly Commonwealth Games.

“We have a strong pedigree in providing sustainable branding solutions for major events and combined with the expertise of the local business community, we hope to deliver a spectacular event for all those involved.”

The company committed itself to work with local companies, suppliers, and staff, with a target or procuring over 65% of its requirements locally.

Its work with Birmingham-based company Hollywood Monster, which supplied printed materials for the project, meant it was able to stay true to its commitment with the two companies working together to dress the Commonwealth Games.

As well as banners, soft-signage, and totems, Birmingham played host to an array of different installations like a countdown clock by Longines, and of course the now famous mechanical bull.

This year’s event marked the first time the Games have been held in the West Midlands

The bull was created by special effects and model building company Artem which made the 10m-tall animal using a combination of production methods involving 3D print, aluminium structuring, foam parts, and a European-sourced 17-tonne telehandler which allowed the bull to move around.

Since the bull debuted in the opening ceremony of the Games, it has been displayed at Centenary Square alongside the previously mentioned Longines clock, and an array of giant pin badges replicating the flags of the 72 competing Commonwealth nations.

After being wholeheartedly embraced by locals and visitors the bull will find a new indoor home at the end of September in order to survive the winter weather.
