Sign suppliers harness the sun

Specialist construction industry signage specialist City and County Graphics has revealed a strategic diversification into the green-sector with the launch of a solar-powered signage range.

City and County Graphics is the latest specialist sign-maker to offer environmentally-friendly solar-powered sign systems

Producing a time-lapse video that shows the installation of a branded ‘Solar City’ sign, the film highlights that the new product is designed for easy specification and installation.

The new technology is fully encapsulated and require no main electricity and requires minimal foundations. It is also obviously environmentally-friendly and is powered by daylight rather than direct sunlight—a key failing of many early products in this sector.

The new launch from City and County Graphics forms part of a wider sector trend that has seen a number of key trade suppliers and manufacturers start to offer environmentally-friendly and solar powered signage solutions from non-PVC vinyl films to digital signage posters that turn themselves off when no-one is looking at them.

One of the key players in this sector that has made great strides in offering solar-powered signage solutions though is Zeta Specialist Lighting, which has seen great success in its systems being used in sectors such as residential and commercial property development.

The decision to include signage at the front of the Solent Trade Park was made after construction of the new car park had been completed

Indeed, Tara Signs landed a major contract with The Hargreaves Group back in mid-2015 because of the green capabilities of Zeta’s technology. Both Hamilton Business Park and Solent Trade Park saw solar-powered solutions pip more conventional modular signage systems due to the expense of bringing mains-fed power to the entrances.

Dave Rossetter, sales support manager at Tara Signs explained at the time: “The decision to include signage at the front of the Solent Trade Park was made after construction of the new car park had been completed. Hargreaves had a preference for the sign to be lit, but channelling into the freshly-laid tarmac to install cabling to power the sign was not an option.”

Tara Signs approached Zeta Specialist Lighting to explore how they could meet the clients’ brief to illuminate the signage using solar power and it recommended its Solar Signage Kit.

The technology was voted Sign Product of the Year at the 2014 British Sign Awards, and includes discreet and flexible PV Solar Panels, Zeta’s LED Embedded Panel and patented PS800 Energy Management System (EMS).

With a number of such products now coming to market, it seems that momentum in the green signage sector may now finally be building—although it is perhaps driven by cost-savings rather than concern for the planet.
