Bright billboards help to make Cardiff feel safer

A campaign created by Cardiff’s business improvement district (BID) has meant city streets have been illuminated with bright signage to help those who may feel at risk in the dark.

FOR Cardiff has worked with Clear Channel to display bright signage that will help women feel safe at night

The initiative is titled, FOR A Safer Cardiff, and has been started to run alongside Freshers’ Fortnight which sees thousands of students and young people fill towns and cities to celebrate the return to University.

The FOR A Safer Cardiff campaign will help residents and visitors all feel safer on the city streets thanks to the 35 digital billboards that have been supplied by Clear Channel.

The billboards light up locations such as bus stops in the city centre and high footfall student areas, helping women to feel safer, especially after the harrowing attacks that have been reported through the UK in the last year.

The screens also include QR codes which link users to the Safe Places app which will show those who feel scared or intimidated find a designated Safe Place.

Whether someone has run out of money and needs a safe ride home, or they’re feeling vulnerable or unsafe in any way, we’re here to help.

Businesses in Cardiff can register as a safe place via the FOR A Safer Cardiff website and can be identified in person by a window sticker or via the official online Safe Places list.

The scheme will run beyond Freshers’ Fortnight and will help businesses and staff members with support and training when dealing with difficult situations.

One of the first businesses to embrace the campaign and become an official member was The Angel Hotel in Cardiff. General manager of the Hotel, Richard Smith, says: “With the reopening of indoor hospitality, we have seen a lot of people come through our doors seeking refuge, with many being young women who feel at risk.

“Whether someone has run out of money and needs a safe ride home, or they’re feeling vulnerable or unsafe in any way, we’re here to help.”

The scheme is encouraging all businesses to help people of any gender to feel safe, day or night, with a friendly face, someone to talk to, and provide support however they can.

The simple yet effective signage was created by FOR Cardiff and displayed by Clear Channel with bright and noticeable billboards.
