Championing apprenticeships in sign-making

Walsall College has called on businesses in the sign-making market to explore the industry’s new apprenticeship standard, highlighting how government funding, online training resources and a higher level skills-set are helping drive interest.

The new standard was introduced in November last year

Introduced in November last year, the standard provides an all-round approach to sign-making, with those behind the initiative this will in turn mean apprentices gain a higher level of skills throughout their training.

More parts of the standard and qualification are available to study online with improved resources, meaning those interested can continue to learn despite the closure of colleges amid the ongoing novel coronavirus (Covid-19) lockdown.

Clive Mitchell, trainer and assessor at Walsall College, says now is the ideal time for those new to, or already working in sign-making, to complete the Level 3 qualification.

“This new standard is an industry game changer,” Mitchell says, adding: “While on the job training continues to be a key component of the apprenticeship, there is also a focus on the bigger picture and a wider set of skills.

“Through this, apprentices will explore the operational side of a business, as well as learn more about digital design and development processes. This ensures their careers and the businesses they represent are more sustainable.”

Small- to medium-sized businesses interested in the new standard can take advantage of the government’s Apprenticeship Incentive Scheme, under which they will receive up to £3,000 for each new apprentice they recruit until March 31st this year.

This funding is in addition to any apprenticeship levy they are already entitled to.

Mitchell adds: “We welcome the opportunity to talk to employers about how to access this training and funding now, in readiness for when their clients reopen and/or rebrand their businesses for a new start.”
