ISA-UK issues warning due to heatwave
The association has reminded installers of the potential issues caused by thermal stress on glass
Shining a spotlight on the industry

A four-day heatwave has come into effect in the UK with temperatures forecast to hit 37C
Craig Brown (chief executive officer) and Sam Armstrong (president) of ISA-UK have both posted about the dangers of installing window graphics in extreme heat such as the UK is experiencing right now.
Both posting on social media platform LinkedIn, the ISA-UK representatives have commented on experiences from the signage community regarding heat-related difficulties.
ISA-UK and Brown have referred to the association’s 2020 guidance note about thermal stress to glass and the application of vinyl graphics.
The guidance document reminds sign companies that glass is ‘technically a liquid material’ and can change in volume and cause compression stress when dealing with temperature changes.
ISA-UK says that sign and graphics companies should be aware of thermal stress as vinyl graphics can cause fractures and cracks to appear within glass. The document explains how sign companies could be forced to pay for damages that may come during or after work is done on an already compromised piece of glass.
Never assume, never underestimate the power of communication. Share real issues that face us all and create the community that we need as an industry.”
If graphics partially cover an area of glass, especially with
multi-coloured or dark graphics, this can increase the amount of heat
generated from sunlight leading to thermal stress.
In his post, Brown says: “Hopefully the guideline can help when
making an informed choice on graphics being used on any external expanse
of glass in a shop, retail or office environment.”
Commenting on LinkedIn, Armstrong states: “As I am hearing this issue far more often than ever before with graphics needed and wanted everywhere, do take note, it is happening. Never assume, never underestimate the
power of communication. Share real issues that face us all and create the community that we need as an industry.”
