Transport for Wales first to use sustainable wrap

Sustainability has never been more of a priority than it is right now. And as a result, many companies are now looking for the most sustainable ways of operating. Transport for Wales saw the benefits of opting for a sustainable wrap for its fleet of trains.

“Sustainability is a guiding principle for us, so when looking at vinyl options, we took the opportunity to choose a film with better credentials to update the graphics of our fleet,” says Colin Lea, commercial and customer experience director for Transport for Wales Rail Services.

Developed by 3M, Envision Print Wrap LX480mC is a non-PVC solution for vehicle wrapping and is also able to be printed using latex, UV or solvent technology.

Lea adds: “The benign materials and processes used to produce Envision Print Wrap LX480mC from 3M, combined with the film’s outstanding performance and durability, keep our trains looking good for longer and allowed us to choose a less environmentally damaging material.”

Aura Graphics, a 3M partner, was the main contractor for the project and stripped the existing signage from the trains before applying the new wrap. The printed films were applied over a single weekend to two-car and three-car Class 175 diesel trains, as well as two two-car Class 143 Pacer train sets that serve the Wales rail network. The new graphics will be fully bilingual to accommodate for the promotion of the Welsh language in the region.

“The excellent material properties of Envision Print Wrap LX480mC from 3M, including features that aid application as well as compatibility with all inks and printer types, enabled us to deliver this project to a high standard and within a tight timescale,” comments Tim Locke, director of rail division at Aura Graphics.

He adds: “As a Platinum Partner to 3M, and with our unique breadth of in-house technical and project-management competencies, we have the capabilities to take on those challenges and are qualified to provide the 3M product warranty on a back-to-back basis.”
