Neon Signage

With neon signage being one of the hardest hit areas of the industry during the Covid-19 pandemic, Rob Fletcher asks: “Do you think demand will return to previous levels and help the sector recover?”

Business picking up

Covid-19 has impacted us quite a lot, as among the major sectors we supply are the hospitality and events industry, and these have suffered huge losses and issues throughout the pandemic.

We have, however, had an increase in requests from end-users requiring neon in their homes. Each time we have gone into lockdown, it has created uncertainty from buyers, so created a couple of quiet months, and then usually one busy month.

However, over the last few weeks or so things have started to really pick up again as we edge closer to more restrictions being lifted and relaxed.

In terms of future demand for neon signage, I do think that demand will continue, but probably more in the use of neon as artwork as opposed to general signage.

The LED alternatives to neon are providing solutions in some settings where neon is not permitted. For example, some landlords of shopping centres do not allow neon, neither do some exhibition venues, even though neon is completely safe to be used in these venues.

I think also, from a retro and nostalgic point of view, there will always be a demand for neon in the market. Neon is a timeless classic and always creates a sense of nostalgia for consumers.

Dispelling myths

Demand has been good overall. Obviously, during the time while many other businesses have been forced to close, demand has fallen away, but this has not been a problem, as we would rather keep everyone who works for us safe during the times when infections have been at their highest.

We are a family-run business and have been in the industry for over 35 years. We have been involved with the manufacture and installation of neon for that whole period, along with the production of a wide variety of other types of signage.

During our time in business we have been fortunate enough to work with a wide variety of amazing clients from small independents through to larger blue chip companies.

Looking towards the future of neon and what it might hold, it’s important that we continue to try and get the correct messaging out to the public about neon, as this can sometimes be a struggle, due to the amount of misinformation put out by companies that know nothing about neon.

We spent time a little while back putting together a document that addresses the incorrect information, and is available to download from our website. It would be a shame to lose a part of the industry that really requires a great deal of skill to produce the end product.
