Mike Smith, operations director at Signfab (UK), has dedicated the last twelve years of his career to the sign industry

Delivering excellence for customers

What is your professional background and how did you come to work at Signfab (UK)?

I have been in manufacturing for over 35 years working mainly in the paper industry but dedicated the last twelve years to the sign industry. I came to Signfab (UK) looking for a new challenge and a change in direction, and I certainly found what I was looking for.

How has the company grown over time?

Signfab (UK) was first established by Carl Hodgson and Paul Bartholomew in 2001 and the company has grown steadily over the years to become the UK’s largest trade sign manufacturer.

To see the changes in technology over the last twelve years has been phenomenal. The laser technology, routers, and paint track technology, to name a few, has being evolving at an ever-increasing pace so the investment has been huge to enable Signfab (UK) to continue to improve the quality and service to our customers.

What services does Signfab (UK) provide to its customers?

Our mission has and always will be to deliver excellence, with exceptional service in a professional and confidential manner. Signfab (UK) keep ahead of industry developments by partnering with global organisations such as Current powered by GE and independent training consultancies such as Make It Happen. We have also been focusing on increasing our quality and service to the industry and growing our fitting teams to ensure we can offer the full complete confidential service.

Why did Signfab (UK) decide to work with Make It Happen and how does this benefit sign-makers?

Signfab (UK) works with Make It Happen to enhance their education programme by utilising our factory to enhance the theory learnt. Make It Happen training days benefit sign-makers and helps to increase the open dialogue between suppliers and client, giving all parties the chance to see a true reflection of manufacturing.

What is your opinion on the key challenges sign-makers are facing and how can you help?

Brexit will at some point influence raw materials and any products coming into the UK from Europe, but Signfab (UK) customers can rest easy as we are already combating any fluctuations in prices and constantly reviewing our supply chain to ensure that our customers still get the best prices viably possible at any time.

CE is now at the forefront in the sign industry (totems and monoliths) and as more and more end-users are being made aware of the legislations, they are demanding the correct certifications for their products. Signfab (UK) forged ahead and were one of the first to comply and are helping customers comply to the regulations by supplying the correct certifications and advising all customers with any issues.

What are Signfab (UK)’s plans for the future?

Signfab (UK) has a positive future; a full restructure of the business from top to bottom took place in January this year to ensure the future of the company and to drive home the improvements of absolute quality of product and absolute quality of service to all the employees at Signfab (UK). This will give the customer the confidence in the products and services provided.
