Elizabeth Line brought to life by signage

The new Elizabeth line meant new projects for the likes of VCCP and A. J Wells & Sons.

The new TfL line which includes both above and underground stations provides travellers in and around London with new ways to travel to key parts of England’s thriving capital.

The project was delayed by more than three years, affected by funds and the pandemic, leading to a government bail that brought the project £3bn over budget.

Named and themed in honour of Queen Elizabeth II, the opening of the service synchronises with the Queen’s platinum Jubilee which has seen a variety of print and sign companies produce products to celebrate the occasion.

The TfL signage and décor has been switched from its iconic red colouring to a royal purple that is sure to become a colour of the year due to its inclusion in celebrations and themed projects.

Iconic London Underground roundels were produced by AJ Wells & Sons, which is one of the few enamel plants left in the UK.

The family run business has produced Underground roundels for more than three decades and was involved in the latest TfL project to produce wayfinding signage, cladding, brackets, and CCTV housings for many of the new stations.

Businesses from right around the UK have benefited from work connected to the Elizabeth line. Throughout its construction, the railway has had an extensive supply chain which has supported businesses of all sizes.

TfL says: “Businesses from right around the UK have benefited from work connected to the Elizabeth line. Throughout its construction, the railway has had an extensive supply chain which has supported businesses of all sizes, and jobs and skills creation across the whole country.

“The Class 345 trains running on the Elizabeth line were built in Derby, roundels and signage for the line were supplied by a family-run business on the Isle of Wight, and a company based in Leeds strengthened and protected London's Victorian sewer networks during construction.”

To promote the new line advertising companies such as VCCP and Wavemaker were brought in to help with out-of-home (OOH) campaigns to highlight the new train service.

The campaign includes the adaptation of iconic TfL roundels to include Elizabeth line benefits such as ‘step free,’ ‘more space,’ and ‘faster journeys’.

The advertising has appeared across OOH sites, digital displays, door drips, print, TV, and special build bus wraps across many iconic London buses.
