Air cleaning signage to be rolled out

Outdoor media agency, Kinetic, has partnered with UK cleantech company, Pluvo, in a unique digital signage rollout.

The two companies have put their own fields of expertise together to fund the rollout of digital signage that can clear air pollution.

Installed in high traffic areas such as train stations, airports, and roadside locations such as bus stops, the 11ft-high Pluvo columns double as advertising space.

The technology works by attracting, trapping and neutralising airborne pollutants which are sucked into the unit. Three stages of filtration are applied to remove specific pollutants before the clean air is released back into the environment.

According to Kinetic, the signage can clean up to one cubic metre of air per second which is the equivalent of 2,000 human breaths.

A six-month trial at a site owned by Landsec in London proved that the signage could clean up to 99% of pollution in the air including noxious gases and airborne viruses.

Matteo Maccario, chief executive officer of Pluvo, says: “More than seven million people die prematurely each year from air pollution. While the initial lockdown caused a steep drop, we are already seeing pollution levels back to pre-lockdown levels in the majority of UK cities.

“Air pollution isn’t a problem that’s going to go away, and our respiratory health has never been more important. Pluvo’s mission is to help solve the problem, and the completion of our trial takes us one step closer to that.”

The first set of units are due to be installed in October and will be funded on a sponsorship basis. Kinetic is currently in talks with brands and says it has seen “strong interest” from renewable energy suppliers and electric vehicle companies. Following the first rollout, hundreds of units are predicted to be installed over the coming years.
