Clear Channel celebrates LGBTQ+ with Pride Inside

Digital-out-of-home giant Clear Channel has donated 1,000 digital screens across the UK to a new grassroots campaign celebrating the LGBTQ+ community.

From June 15th, screens will feature images created by and featuring members of the LGBTQ+ community celebrating Pride from their homes, as part of the Pride Inside initiative.

Pride usually sees tens of thousands of people take to the streets to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, but the outbreak of novel coronavirus (Covid-19) has led to the cancellation of such events.

However, writer, performer and drag star Ginger Johnson came up with the idea of celebrating digitally, with the campaign to feature images from more than 120 queer contributors and photographers.

Contributors include the lead singer of a Belfast queer punk band, a Newcastle drag king, an NHS nurse in south London and original members of the Gay Liberation Front.

It’s crucial that LGBTQ+ people from all walks of life are visible and proud in our public spaces even if we can’t be there together in person

“Usually we take to the streets for Pride,” Johnson says, adding: “We take to stages, demos and dancefloors. We climb on board floats or walk shoulder to shoulder with our families and friends but this summer that just isn’t possible.

“So it’s crucial that LGBTQ+ people from all walks of life are visible and proud in our public spaces even if we can’t be there together in person.”

Clear Channel’s chief marketing officer Martin Corke adds: “While Pride events may not be happening on the streets, we hope to create a sense of shared experience and bring that community spirit out-of-home with our very public medium.”
