Wolves star on target with gender reveal

Mexican football star Raúl Jiménez and fiancée Daniela Basso recently took part in a unique gender reveal for their new baby, with help from Wolverhampton-based print company DIS Group.

Jiménez was challenged to kick a football at a printed target hanging in the goalmouth at Molineux, the home of Premier League team Wolverhampton Wanderers, who he plays his club football with.

Should Jiménez hit the target with his shot, fireworks would be set off behind the goal, with either blue or pink smoke revealing the gender of the baby.

Jiménez succeeded in hitting the target, with the blue smoke revealing that he and his partner are expecting a baby boy.

DIS printed the target onto 3mm ACM material with protective matt laminate on the face, and fixed 18mm ply to the reverse with steel ratchet hooks. By doing this, DIS met a brief that the target could not break or violently swing when it was hit by the ball.

The effect of our printed target meant that the finished article looked like it was floating and when it was hit by Raul, it reacted amazingly and the cannon went off as planned

For the smoke effects, a company that provides the fireworks on matchdays at Molineux put together a display to ensure that the coloured fireworks would go off at the exact time Jiménez hit the printed target.

“Daniela had the idea that Raúl would hit the target with a shot and then a powder blue or pink would filled the goal mouth,” DIS Group sales director Dave Purcell says.

“The effect of our printed target meant that the finished article looked like it was floating and when it was hit by Raul, it reacted amazingly and the cannon went off as planned.”

Jiménez joined Wolves in the summer of 2018 and, at the time of writing, has scored 26 goals for the club. He also has 81 Mexico national caps to his name, scoring 24 goals in the process.
