Unconventional billboard promotes The Gentlemen

A billboard celebrating the launch of director Guy Richie’s most recent film, The Gentlemen, was created entirely using marijuana.

The film features Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell, and Hugh Grant, and is about an American expatriate who became rich by growing a successful marijuana business in London.

Artist Zach Cole Fernandez is behind the billboard artwork. He used various parts of the weed plant including the stems, leaves and flowers to create portraits of some of the stars of the movie and the words ‘The Gentlemen’.

In an Instagram post which showcases the entire creation process, Fernandez – who goes by the name of ‘JesusHands’, describes the creation of the billboard as challenging. He can be seen using different brushes and white paint, as well as the marijuana which appears to be of a crumbly, chalky consistency.

Honored to have been commissioned to create this portrait piece for the new @guyritchie film @thegentlemen It was made using different parts of the cannabis plant which was a bit challenging but am completely satisfied with the results. #TheGentlemen is in theaters this Friday, go see it! #jesushands

Fernandez has made a name for himself regarding marijuana in the past. In 2017, he altered the Hollywood sign to say “Hollyweed”. However, this is the first time he has used the ‘real thing’ in his work.

This unique billboard design could be considered controversial as it isn’t even legal to bring it into some states in the US. It was toured around various places in the country with locations such as WeedCon and other media events on the list.

Speaking to Adweek, the artist comments: “Wherever we take it, the smell is like a cloud trailing behind us.”
