Virgin Media calls out BT with billboard stunt

Virgin Media and BT are currently involved in an out-of-home battle for the title of fastest internet provider.

Virgin Media hit back at BT after it placed billboards around Bristol which read “Bristol, don’t settle for Virgin. Get ultrafast Full Fibre with more reliable speeds than Virgin M200 and M350.”

In response, Virgin Media, which describes the stunt by BT as “dubious, unsubstantiated advertising”, has been driving mobile digital billboards around the city and photographing themselves in front of the offending signs.

Virgin’s billboards read: “B******T. Our fastest average speed in Bristol is 516Mbps. That’s loads faster than BT. Enough said.”

According to Virgin, its network covers almost 300,000 premises in Bristol with top packages having an average speed of 516Mbps, which the provider says is “significantly faster” than BT’s Ultrafast Fibre 250.

Residents of Bristol won’t be fooled by BT’s babble and we look forward to welcoming anyone who wants to experience life in the fast lane with our superior ultrafast speeds

Cilesta Van Doorn, brand and marketing director at Virgin Media comments: “BT’s broadband bunkum just couldn’t go unchecked. Residents of Bristol won’t be fooled by BT’s babble and we look forward to welcoming anyone who wants to experience life in the fast lane with our superior ultrafast speeds.

“With a reliable future-proof network that is bringing gigabit speeds to Bristol and more of the UK, Virgin Media is, as always, leading the charge – catch us if you can.”

Virgin says it opted for mobile billboards to challenge BT's claims as they allow it to deliver its message to locations across Bristol in a fun and humorous way.

The ‘stunt’ is also being broadcast across Virgin’s social medias and the firm says it is looking at taking its billboards to other locations in the future.
