Mimaki helps bring the desert to London

Architects and designer duo Tomaso Boano and Jonas Prišmontas recently joined forces with Mimaki EMEA to produce a series of large-format work for a special exhibition in London.

Boano and Prišmontas, the owners of London-based architectural firm Boano Prišmontas, were asked to exhibit their ‘Alphabet’ landscape installation at Crate Brewery in Hackney.

Having initially decided to stage an existing project, the pair changed their mind and worked with Mimaki EMEA to produce two large-scale artworks, measuring 2.5 x 9.5m and 2.5 x 3.6m, for the show.

The artworks were printed on SILENCIO, a sound-absorbing technical textile from German company PONGS, using Mimaki’s UV printing technology.

Art is at the core of the installation and Mimaki’s cutting-edge printing technology was the tool that enabled us to make an idea become a working reality

“The project at Crate Brewery perfectly combines interior design, art and state-of-the-art technology,” Boano says, adding: “In fact, we have re-designed the space – with some architectural crafting involved when installing the printed artworks.

“Art is at the core of the installation and Mimaki’s cutting-edge printing technology was the tool that enabled us to make an idea become a working reality.

“This cooperation with Mimaki EMEA has enlightened us on the capabilities of digital printing. We are already generating new ideas and even revisiting some concepts that were put aside because we were struggling to find a way to produce them.”
