World’s tallest LED screen to set sail

The world’s-first hybrid powered expedition cruise ship, the MS Roald Amundsen, will feature the world’s tallest LED screen to set sail on the sea.

Spanning seven decks and 17.5m, the giant screen is beyond 4K ultra-HD with a seam-free and borderless display.

ProntoTV, a Norwegian digital signage manufacturer undertook the staggering installation, partnering with LED supplier Expromo, and AV infrastructure firm Bravo to complete the project.

The installation is part of a wider project by expedition cruise provider Hurtigruten, to build two new hybrid ships designed to “revolutionise travel at sea with soundless sailings.” The wall will enable passengers to enjoy a live 360-degree feed of the surroundings from the ship’s mast and underwater drones.

Sales director at ProntoTV, Paal Berg, says: “This is one of the most spectacular and technically difficult installations done at sea. Hurtigruten’s ships also operate in exotic waters that sometimes can be rough and without a stable internet connection (that can give chills down the spine of every millennial).

By introducing the tallest LED screen at sea, we will bring the splendid beauty of the passing nature to the guest inside

“However, the video wall will be amazing by showing live content using the ship’s own equipment and pre-scheduled content triggered by the ships location and GPS so everyone including millennials will enjoy the experience.”

Hurtigruten has also installed interactive touch tables to inform and entertain the guests on board. The tables will show where the ship is located and have the potential to show live whale locations for optimum whale watching.

Commenting on the project, chief executive officer at Hurtigruten, Daniel Skjeldam, says: “By introducing the tallest LED screen at sea, we will bring the splendid beauty of the passing nature to the guest inside.

“We can use it to stream live lectures and presentations, to set the theme for the voyage, or just create a special atmosphere. But most importantly, it will be utilised to broadcast the spectacular nature to our guests on board in a format never seen before.”
