Up the Villa: BSGA Awards hits the spot

The inaugural annual awards event for the British Sign Awards was hailed as a good day for the industry and a massive success by those who attended.

The event was held yesterday at the home of Aston Villa FC where 320 people filled the club’s vast function room to hear who had won what and to celebrate a resurgent industry.

Organised by The British Sign and Graphics Association (BSGA) and hosted by David Catanach, the director of the trade body, the awards were made during an afternoon in which the signage industry took stock of its achievements.

Sponsored by 3M, the event showcased all aspects of the industry, from one-man bands to larger outfits with clients from Tesco to Scottish Gas

In a slick presentation with guest presenter, after dinner speaker, and comedian Bob ‘The Cat’ Bevan, Catanach gave brief descriptions of the short-listed candidates and winners in a ceremony styled on the Oscars, which included visuals and graphics on large screens around the hall.

3M was the corporate sponsor with a further 13 firms sponsoring different awards. The event showcased all aspects of the industry, from one-man bands to larger outfits with clients from Tesco to Scottish Gas.

Catanach said many of those who won awards were not members of the BSGA but he said it didn’t matter as it was to celebrate the entire industry. He hoped, however, that the event would encourage more people to join, as the BSGA is all about improving standards within the sign industry. He also said that there were already plans for another awards event next year and thanked the sponsors and members for their support.
