Wallcovering sales boost for UK market

The UK wallcovering market has been handed a major boost after figures showed a six percent rise in sales for the first half of 2013, in comparison with the same period last year

The statistics are courtesy of the British Coating Federation (BCF) Wallcoverings Sector Council, which represents all the main manufacturers.

The increase comes on the back of an 11 percent improvement in the final half of 2013, and means sales rollage as a whole for the past 12 months is up four percent on the previous period.

“The message coming through is that high quality design-led wallpapers with a contemporary edge are playing well with today’s consumers keen to add a distinctive and fashionable yet affordable look to their homes,” says Anthony Garnett, managing director of Fine Decor, and chair of the Wallcoverings Sector Council.

Figures also show a significant improvement on export performance in the last six months—the final half of 2012 standing out in particular with exports up 11 percent.

Exports to the European and North American markets both increased, while demand for British products in Latin America and Australia is also growing.

Garnett adds: “With the growth in easy to hang ‘paste the wall’ products increasing rapidly, it seems customers are rediscovering the uniqueness of wallpaper and the individuality this form of decorating now offers.”
